Ice in the guides and a Coho

I am already longing for the dog days of summer. On my way home from the river this afternoon I found myself day dreaming of boggle bugs and the top water bites. I love fall fishing, but what follows is anther thing. The winter sometimes seems to last forever and all we have are the memories of fish caught and hope of next season. I will retreat to the basement to the fly tying bench to dream of what might be and what take comfort that spring is only 4 months away. Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. I know we have been blessed beyond what we are worthy  of.

Report

How do the fish know where they are safe? I was out fishing the Kewaunee river yesterday and as I braved the 20 mph wind and the cold weather I stopped to ponder "where the heck are the fish". I mean the river are usual full of Browns this time of year. After about two hours with just one fish spotted I decided to hang it up for the day.On my way out I stopped to look over the bridge on Hwy F and what do you know there's the fish. I could count at least 20 Browns hanging on the upside of the bridge in the fish refuge area. Well I tip my hat to them and know we will meet again on anther day.

Weather change

As I sit down this afternoon I see some flurries coming down from the sky. Colder weather is on the way! Last week was a great week of fishing. We seen everything from Coho's to a fresh Chinook salmon to even a report of one angler catching an Atlantic salmon ( she must of took a wrong turn somewhere along the way). I struggle if I will be deer hunting this year or continuing to fish. With the rain of this weekend it is setting up to be anther great week of fishing. The best method still continues to be long level fluorocarbon leaders, just enough split shot to get it down in the current and number 6-10 eggs. Long leech patterns for Brown's and Coho's in deep pools

Some have asked what kind of rod have I been fishing? One has to remember that a fly rod is a tool and no matter what the price of the tool if it is the wrong tool for the job it becomes ineffective. A fly rod for these large fish must have a heavy butt section and a large fighting handle. You must find one that is sensitive enough to feel the smallest  grab ,but be able to control the fish.I have used the Gallatin Onyx for the last two years. It has been a worthy battle tool. Here is a link to there web site

I hope you enjoy your fall fishing

Nov 5th Report

I was out fishing a couple of times this last week with some good success. There are still some fresh Salmon around. We should be stating to get more Steelhead and Brown Trout in the tributaries this next week. Looks like a warm up is in store, which will make fishing a whole lot more comfortable. Here’s a shot of a nice Brown. There is no since getting out to early in the morning this time of year. Eggs, leaches, big snarly flies are all good choices. Also remember to work all layers of the water column you be surprised what you find.
