In search of open water

This is the time of year I really start dreaming of open blue water and warm white sand beach's.But this is the price we pay to fish some of the great waters of the Great Lakes. With the temp rising today I went out in search of open water.I was debating if I was going to bring my rod along, but instead I brought my camera. One side of the dam open water and a chance to swing flies and on the other side I hear the roar of a ice auger making short work of the ice.Oh well I'll go back to my chair, a nap and dream of better days to come.

Ice in the guides and a Coho

I am already longing for the dog days of summer. On my way home from the river this afternoon I found myself day dreaming of boggle bugs and the top water bites. I love fall fishing, but what follows is anther thing. The winter sometimes seems to last forever and all we have are the memories of fish caught and hope of next season. I will retreat to the basement to the fly tying bench to dream of what might be and what take comfort that spring is only 4 months away. Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. I know we have been blessed beyond what we are worthy  of.

Report

How do the fish know where they are safe? I was out fishing the Kewaunee river yesterday and as I braved the 20 mph wind and the cold weather I stopped to ponder "where the heck are the fish". I mean the river are usual full of Browns this time of year. After about two hours with just one fish spotted I decided to hang it up for the day.On my way out I stopped to look over the bridge on Hwy F and what do you know there's the fish. I could count at least 20 Browns hanging on the upside of the bridge in the fish refuge area. Well I tip my hat to them and know we will meet again on anther day.

Weather change

As I sit down this afternoon I see some flurries coming down from the sky. Colder weather is on the way! Last week was a great week of fishing. We seen everything from Coho's to a fresh Chinook salmon to even a report of one angler catching an Atlantic salmon ( she must of took a wrong turn somewhere along the way). I struggle if I will be deer hunting this year or continuing to fish. With the rain of this weekend it is setting up to be anther great week of fishing. The best method still continues to be long level fluorocarbon leaders, just enough split shot to get it down in the current and number 6-10 eggs. Long leech patterns for Brown's and Coho's in deep pools

Some have asked what kind of rod have I been fishing? One has to remember that a fly rod is a tool and no matter what the price of the tool if it is the wrong tool for the job it becomes ineffective. A fly rod for these large fish must have a heavy butt section and a large fighting handle. You must find one that is sensitive enough to feel the smallest  grab ,but be able to control the fish.I have used the Gallatin Onyx for the last two years. It has been a worthy battle tool. Here is a link to there web site

I hope you enjoy your fall fishing

Nov 5th Report

I was out fishing a couple of times this last week with some good success. There are still some fresh Salmon around. We should be stating to get more Steelhead and Brown Trout in the tributaries this next week. Looks like a warm up is in store, which will make fishing a whole lot more comfortable. Here’s a shot of a nice Brown. There is no since getting out to early in the morning this time of year. Eggs, leaches, big snarly flies are all good choices. Also remember to work all layers of the water column you be surprised what you find.

Summer 2011 Fly Fishing Trips

First Adventure
Next summer First Adventure is offering some great fly-fishing trips in Colorado.  From new anglers to advance, First Adventure is waiting for you to come wet a line with us.  Come join us in Rocky Mountain National Park for a true fly-fishing adventure!

The "Cottage"

Don't worry we won't make you sleep on the ground for four nights.  Our facilities at Ravencrest Chalet offer "bunk" style sleeping and full bath accommodations.  The "Cottage" houses a max of eight people on each side of the building.  Both sides have full baths and the building has a commons area with a mini fridge, couch, and coffee maker.
All meals are served "family style."  We will be doing some BBQ lunches out in the park on our days of fishing.

Who is First Adventure and AJ Dudek

From an early age, A.J. Dudek had a passion for the outdoors and pursuing the things that God has created.  With a little help from his father Lee, A.J. began learning the art of angling, hunting, and wildlife conservation. A.J. Dudek grew up in N.E. Wisconsin.  Originally learning how to fish with worms and spinners, A.J. moved out to Colorado where he started learning the art of fly angling. Fly-fishing became a true passion and the next few years were spent teaching and guiding in Durango, CO and Estes Park, CO. Working in fly shops all over the country has allowed A.J. to become an accomplished guide, fly tier, and educator. His first love is trout, but A.J. enjoys fishing for river small mouth, carp, steelhead, and is hoping to get into some saltwater angling. A graduate of Moody Bible Institute, and a newly wed, A.J. and his wife Jen, and daughter Ainsley now reside in the Denver area. Being the founder/director of First Adventure, A.J. is hoping to see the business grow and expand nationally at some point

Are there any fish still around?

One of the most asked questions these days.. The answer is yes, although you must be willing to travel and do some more walking. There are Coho in the Kewaunee and Browns in the Oconto. One key to fishing this time of year is low and slow presentation. You must also offer a more natural drift. Fish want to use the least about of energy to get the most amout of food. Good luck out there

Any Questions?

I hope everyone is out fishing these days.  This blog is meant to be “Q & A” as well as an information source.  Go ahead and shoot those questions in - and I will do my best to answer them.  I will also post fishing reports occasionally and hopefully a lot of fish pictures.  Please email your fishing pictures.  They might be better than mine and we will get them up for everyone to see.

Best,
Nathan
