Great Lakes Fishing

Being a old salt dog from coastal North Carolina I have enjoyed becoming a Great Laker fisherman. Wisconsin offers some of the best fishing in the nation. Best Smallmouth,Musky,Walleye in the nation. Then add in Great Lake run Salmon,Brown Trout, and Steelhead it all adds up to some great fishing.

Here is a shot from our float trip yesterday

I must admit I need help

I must admit I need help! I wake up and first thing I do is check the weather and the stream flows. The rods and waders are always in the truck. I walk through the girls sports store (Hobby Lobby) and try to figure out what I can use to tie flies. But it came to a head this opening weekend of deer hunting. I was all set to sit in the stand watching for the thirty pointer reading the Drake when I get a text from someone looking to book a guide trip.So needless to say I was packed up by noon and on my way to the river.I am thankful for my wife that understands and encourages me to share my passion of the outdoors and never makes me feel guilty and look 's forwards to the days I can guide her..And thank goodness there's no know cure for being fish addicted

Trout Beauty

I was out fishing with my good friend Jim Hauer from Blue Sky Furled Leaders on the greasy banks of one of the lakeside tributary's this morning testing out their new Magnum Drifter Series indicator The river was off color and still running with a good flow so we hit all the pools below the riffles.Jim had miss two fish earlier in the pool and with our departure time coming soon Jim hooks this dime bright trout. What a great day to be on the river.

Great Fishing Still

Coho,Steelhead, and Brown Trout can be found in most of the tributary around Northeast Wisconsin. The great fishing continues with little slow down in the future. With the rain coming down right now this will set up a great weekend and next week for fishing.Swinging big flashy flies and nymp with egg dropper's still are taking great numbers of fish. The problem is to many rivers and streams to cover. Get out and get some for yourself

New Video,Fly Fishing for Great Lakes Salmon

I am asked all the time do Salmon really eat flies. The answer is yes! The video shows two different methods of fishing for them. The first method is a nontraditional method using a fly rod and reel spun up with level mono/flourcarbon line.I use a clown egg(http://bestbugz.com/) with a small spilt shot depending on flow.Casting down stream and letting it drift. The second is more traditional.I use a Blue Sky Furled Leader Drifter Series leader (http://www.blueskyfly.com/) and a egg sucking leech.Casting up stream and watching the ball indicator move.

Hopefully the video helps

A End To Epic Salmon Season

Well as you can tell by the title of the post The mass migration of the King Salmon are in the final days. There are a few fresh fish around but for the most part the river looks like a battle ground.Dead or dying fish floating and laying around the river not to mention the poor shape of the river it's self. The banks have been trampled down and litter lay around like a football stadium after a game. Sad real sad!Report from around the lake all agree this has been one of the best runs in 10 years. The size and number of fish where above average. There also has been a return of Coho Salmon this year after a 3 year delay. Brown Trout will still come in November, but nothing like the number we have seen this fall from the Kings.Well hope everyone has had a great season,it is always nice to catch up with the same guys every year and meet new ones.

Cheers to a great season!!

The Good,The Bad and The Ugly

The Good news is we are getting some rain as I type this. We have been without rain for awhile now and most of the rivers need some water to bring a fresh batch of fish in. The King Salmon run has already peaked and now we are on the down hill slide. We may get one more push of fresh fish next week then it will wind down to nothing by the end of the month.A few Coho and Steelhead are around as well.

The Bad news is there are dead stinky fish floating all around the river. The trash that people leave is unbelievable as well as the lack of sportsmanship.I know there are some that depend on those fish for meals, but most don't.

The Ugly, I had a run in with one of the not so sportsman today. I hooked a nice female this morning and as she made her run up river she knew right where the tree in the water was. I gave her some slack hoping she would turn back towards me. But as she got cozy under the tree I knew there would be no getting her out without tearing up my line so I straighting out the line and broke her off.My net guy walked over and confirmed she was hooked in the corner of the mouth  and was laying there recovering. Then out of no where a older guy with the silver spider (treble hook) walk over to her lying there and reached over the tree and hooked her under the belly and then put her on his stringer. I told him if he did leave the river I call the DNR warden.

Although I have seen many violations on the river, I see allot of guys doing it right. I fish with a a group of great sportsman that are very polite, good fisherman and helpfully to one anther. There will always be the ugly but I just choose to fish with the good.

First Steelhead of the Fall

Landed a nice fresh Steelhead this morning! Pound for pound I love these fish . When I set the hook he screamed about 25 yards of line off in a hurry. Always remember these fish can't be picked up by the gills they need to handled under the belly and tail .

Big Fish Continue to Come

Big fish continue to come up the river. I have seen and landed some of the largest fish I have seen in awhile. With the rain we had last weekend the fish have turned on and we are starting to see the large numbers enter the river.Remember a fallen river is always a better river watch the stream flow data and pick your times to maximise your day.Size 6 Clown eggs with flourcarbon leader have worked the best. I seen at least 6 fish take the fly before it hit the bottom today.

26.5 lbs

10 Year Old Logan Fox lands 25+ Pound Salmon

One of the most enjoyable things about guiding is to see a young persons face when they hold that big fish in there hands for the first time.I had the privilege of guiding Ben and Logan Fox this weekend Logan 10, landed a 25+ pound King Salmon on eight pound test line.To see his face when the fish made the first of several jumps was priceless. Way to go Logan!!!!

A View From the Guide Seat; 2011 Smallmouth Season

The cool night air and the drying of leaves signal the changing of a season. I find my mind starting to think of large mighty fish from the lake making their way up the rivers and streams as they have done before to find a place to deposit what nature has forced them to do.
The 2011 Smallmouth season is in the books and so I thought I’d share a few highlights. The long warm humid spell brought fish up to the surface looking to engulf anything that hit the water. The fish were tight to the bank, barely in inches of water and that’s where one of my favorite takes this season came from. Jim Hauer’s Seagull pattern had been hot all day and as we made our way down the river I spotted a “fishy” looking spot. I made a good cast landing within inches of the bank, let the rings settle and made a big strip. A wake erupted from under a dock and the fish was zeroed in on the fly. As he closed in I made another long strip to keep his attention with the bubble trail following behind the fly. The fish lunged for the fly, but missed. With another big strip he swung around and engulfed the fly. Wow, fish on!
Although raising many large fish this year I was shut out of the 20” club. But never fear there is always Jarred with his Dave Whitlock Fruit Cocktail that fills in. Jarred raised a 21” smallmouth last year on the same fly around the other side of the island and this year would prove no different. We had been shut down most all evening with gusty winds that were making the top water bite a bit sketchy. Oh yes, we had to switch to many different flies that night trying to raise enough fish to make the hour drive seem to be a success. We had all but called it a night with a run back up to the boat landing and night beginning to settle. As we raced up river, I could see the wind had settled down and the river had turned to glass. One more shot for a fish I thought. So I slowed the boat and told Jarred to make a cast towards the shoreline. As we drifted towards a mid river rock bar I saw Jarred’s line go tight. Jarred was unusually quiet about the fish on his line. As I reached down to net the fish I saw a large fish emerge from the stained water and yes it had made the benchmark, 20 inches! But the best was yet to come, as we drifted down river taking pictures, measuring, and then releasing the fish. We ended up under a tree canopy when a swarm of bats were attracted to Jarred’s bright colored fishing shirt. All I could see was Jarred defending himself with his fly rod as a fencing sword against the bats. I laughed so hard, sound had stopped coming out.
My second trip to the river with Don was going to be a hard one to follow up since our first trip had raised many fish that day. But as we motored up river to our first spot it looked more like a Montana trout stream than a northern Wisconsin Smallmouth river. If I could count the rings from rising fish I would need all my fingers and toes. I told Don that there was some kind of hatch coming off the water and it was going to be a great day again. As a fish would rise I would tell Don, “Forty feet, 1 o’clock to your right.” And Don would hit the spot with the Olive Green Boogle Bug (Thanks Larry at Hayward Fly Shop, great color). This continued most of the day. At one point Don could not even clear the line from his feet from fighting so many fish. We would drift through the holes, net fish and turn around and do the same thing again. This finally came to a stop after a front blew us off the water.
So with so many great memories of the summer fish caught and fish lost, I look forward to the fall fishing, cooler temps and a little Packer football.

Best Times

My Favorite Egg for Fall Salmon

With the summer winding down and Smallmouth  moving into the fall feeding patterns the change of the season is in the air.The water levels are prime for the Salmon migration. reports are already coming in of fish staging around some rivers. With a change to the west this week in the wind and a good amount of rain the pump is getting primed for action. Here is my favorite egg for the fall time here in Wisconsin. I like to fish it with a fluorocarbon leader and a small split shot in the deep holes and slots early in the run.It should be a great season I have heard of some bigger than normal fish being boated out on the lake this summer.

Guided salmon trips are only 225.00 for a half day 1-2 people

So that is only a little over a 100.00 each and that will set you up for a more successful season

20 day fish is not uncommon

Here's to a Great Fishermen

Some days on the water are good, some great, and then some are golden yesterday  was one of such golden days. I had the pleasure of hosting long time fly angler author and local fishing legend Don Larmouth. Don has been plagued with Parkinson disease which has slowed his body down, but to my pleasure not his mind or his drive to continue a long career of fly fishing. He can still cast 50 feet with little effort and place the fly within inches of the bank.then when he has a fish on he's all business. I mostly enjoyed the many story of a man that shares the same passion for the water as I. Don has fished with some of fly fishing greatest guides in the world so when he addressed me as Captain at the end of our trip and told me this was a "red letter day for him" I toke that as a great compliment.

Here's a You Tube link to one of many fish from that day.

July Fishing Report

I have finally made it to the river after being in North Carolina and then camping with the family it was good to get some flies "into the air". I got to fish with my good friend Jim Hauer from Blue Sky Furled Leaders http://www.blueskyfly.com/. Jim is a excellent fisherman and boat man which makes the fishing even more enjoyable. After a little mapping on the upper stretch of the river it was time to get down to some fishing. We fished a couple of deep holes and some mid river reefs and wood with not much action. Then we switched to some poppers and divers and fished a shallow bank. On the first cast we had a fish and then anther, but the trick was the fish where tight to the bank. So if you couldn't cast within inches of the bank the fish was not coming to get it..We finished the day with many in the boat and many that came unbuttoned.and even one that jumped out of the boat before we could get a pictures. Some great fish, some great laughs and anther great season. Pictures coming soon...

I hooked up with my buddy Tim to get put on some Red's. Well needless to say the day was great day! The wind was something! about 25/30 mph all day so there was no hiding from it.We saw some red's blow up on some shrimp in shallow and I had a head turn but no red's in the boat.We did catch our share of Speckled Trout,Blue Fish and what is a day without Sharks. Here are some pictures and yes Rebecca did catch a bigger one than me.Hope to get out more this week

Water Was High But Still Landed a Couple

The water comes up and goes down a little right before more water, but remember last year the run was almost done by this time. Some fish have already done their thing and are heading back, but with cold temps this weekend we should get more fresh fish.

Best of luck
